Karate Klass in Yadkinville

By: Tasha Romero - (3/17/00)

Here's some good news for karate buffs and fitness seekers all over Yadkin County. On March 7th Forbush High's very own Ashley Comer, a second degree black belt in the Sanshinkai martial arts, opened her own dojo, a branch of Karate International, in the Yadkinville Elementary School art building. Beginners and experts, from ages five and up, are welcome. Classes start at 6:30 and last 55 minutes. The cost depends on the program you sign up for, and the first class is free.

Ashley knows and teaches a mixture of techniques from all four martial arts countries-Okinawa, Japan, China, and Korea. There is no physical contact, such as sparring, with other students until the third rank, which is gold belt. The classes are grouped according to rank, the first class consisting of adults and children with the lowest two ranks. Adults and children with the next two higher ranks make up the second class. The third class is for society students.

Society members are students with a green belt or higher and who have committed themselves to the goal of reaching the rank of black belt. Society students learn more complex techniques, such as judo and jujitsu. Ashley is currently the sole instructor, but society members will be helping with student instruction as well.

Ashley also has her own instructor, and continues her four years of training at another dojo. She stresses that karate is strictly for self defense and discipline only. "By taking these classes, in time, you will gain knowledge of the origin of martial arts, self confidence, physical fitness and self defense. Plus have lots of fun!"
