Forbush High Science Olympiad Team Captures Two Medals at Regional Competition

Contributed by: Lee Stephens (2/14/00)

The county champion Forbush High Science Olympiad team competed at the regional competition February 5, 2000, at East Chapel Hill High school and walked away with two medals, despite the stiff competition and the newness of the team. The first-year team fared well, competing against 13 other schools from across the Piedmont.

Matt McCarn and Jeramia Parana finished in second place in the Physics Lab event, which concentrated on electric currents and motion in two dimensions. Matt McCarn, Tori Nichols, and Scott Williams placed third in the Experimental Design event, which focused on writing a formal lab.

Granted it was a sacrifice for the ten-member team to leave from school at 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning, the team had plenty of excitement during the day, including a rousing game of Pokemon played by a couple of the team members.

Scott Williams also competed in an event entitled “The Wright Stuff,” which is a competition between rubberband-powered airplanes. Scott did not let disappointment slow him down, vowing that “I’ll be back next year” after his plane did not perform as well as expected.

The Science Olympiad Team members include: Edgar Arroyo, David Bell, Brooke Choplin, Richard Fore, Matt McCarn, Tori Nichols, Jeramia Parana, Kelly Whitesell, Scott Williams, and Stephanie Ziglar.
