Land by FHS Soccer Field Used as Trash Dump Symptom of Bigger Issues

Contributed by Mr. Redman's Environmental Science Class - (3/17/00)

Did you realize that many students at Forbush High School depend too much on the administration and staff for guidance and support? Are these the adults by whom we need to be led? Throughout our high school years we have been encouraged to maintain a clean and balanced environment, especially here on campus. When we fall short of this goal, we are penalized by having our morning and afternoon breaks suspended. Is this really a crime? Can you really be punished for polluting your own property?

Students of Mr. Redman's Environmental Science Class are studying the current state of the environment, and did you know that it is suffering a great deal? One way our environment is suffering is from the excessive amount of trash we discovered on the hill on the edge of the lower soccer field. There we saw such discarded items as old tires, filing cabinets, broken desks, abandoned stereos, plywood, glass, and plastic drums.

Who is to blame? For us, the answer is "everyone". At some point in our lives, we have all been driving down the highway or walking along the street and tossed, without thinking, trash onto the ground. Had we thought before acting, we would have realized that someone has to clean up our carelessness. The students in this class would like to take action to help clean up this mess by volunteering our time and energy. Years ago, before our land was invaded by polluters, "Mother Nature" was enhanced by beauty. With everyone lending a helping hand we can make her beautiful and flourishing again.

If any of you would like to help us clean up the land by the soccer field, let us know. We would appreciate your support and encourage everyone to take some type of action to improve our environment.

Thank You for your support.
