By: Nathan Walls - (4/19/00)

After going through a tough regular season, and NCAA Tournament schedule, the Michigan State Spartans won the NCAA Men's Basketball Championship. In earlier rounds Michigan State defeated Valpairaiso, Saint Louis, Syracuse, Iowa State, and Wisconsin, before beating Florida to win their first national championship since 1979, when Magic Johnson played for the Spartans.

Coach Tom Izzo had a very athletic team this year, led by senior Morris Peterson, also known as "Sweet Mo Pete." Peterson led the team in scoring for his second straight season, while garnering All-American honors. Peterson was also named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, with the highest individual point total of the tournament.

Senior point guard, Mateen Cleaves, continued his All-American play in this year's tournament, as he dished out assist after assist to his teammates.

Senior Willie Naylor and ESPN Basketball Analyst Dick Vitale were obviously correct when they predicted that the Spartans would win the tournament.
